Understanding the Work Domain
Everyone probably tells you that you need to identify the different users who will be using the software you develop before you begin programming. We have said it here many times! However, it is important to keep in mind that there are other stakeholders out there who may be involved with the project, but not interacting with it!
The Four Types of Stakeholders:
1. Primary - The primary stakeholders are the users who use the program directly. For example, I am a primary stakeholder for Google since I use their web services!
2. Secondary - The secondary stakeholders are those who either supply input or receive output! I am therefore also a secondary stakeholder in Google because by creating websites I am providing input that is crawled and indexed by Googlebot. Read more about SEO and GoogleBot.
3. Facillitator - The person who maintains or develops the design. Yup, this dude is a stakeholder too, he’s the one who gets yelled at when the system goes down!
4. Indirect - This is the person who is affected by the use of the design but has no contact with it. Often, this is the boss!
