What is Actionscript….?

Sunday, December 3rd, 2006

It’s a scripting language used by Macromedia….ahem…..Adobe for creating Rich Internet Applications. Its based on Ecma Script, that same standard as JavaScript I think.

Its fairly new to me, so I am reading like a madman. Its pretty cool. The whole thing will be kinda big I think.

RSS Feed MP3 Player

Saturday, November 25th, 2006

I have never done this before, but like all things…..I learned how with google search.

This I find, really amazing. The google search that is….

I needed to create a mp3 player that would take an rss feed and autoplay the latest podcast. Also show a list of the previous casts. So, I searched mp3 flash player rss feed. Voila, I had an answer and a tutorial that walked me through how to do it.

Amazing…..

VM Ware

Sunday, November 12th, 2006

If most people are like me I hate installing software that changes a lot of start up files and alters the behavior of my computer. I am currently working on a PHP/MySQL site and had to create a localhost development environment. So, rather than install all this on my PC or my laptop I created a VM Ware virtual machine.

I bought VMWare Workstation and had an extra copy of Windows XP. I then downloaded Apache 2.0 PHP 5, and MySQL and loaded and configured them on the Virtual XP OS. It works great. I then added the Macromedia Studio 8, and was off and running. I can even test my websites on another computer by navigating to localhost/devsite.

It works for me, but the software was a little steep.

MySQL, Flash, and PHP.

Sunday, November 5th, 2006

Tonight I did a great tutorial that I found at Web Monkey. I have to see it is tres cool. I have often wondered how to brdige Flash and php and this is what I was looking for. I spent more time learnind Ruby on Rails than php and regret it some. I have picking up quite a bit of work lately and everyone wants php and are reluctant to venture into RoR. Oh, well there money is still good with me, but my learning curve never seems to end.

Check out the lesson, its worth the time. Its called Building with Flash and MySQL.

Audio snips

Saturday, October 28th, 2006

I recently was creating a Flash ad and had the need for a fly buzzing about your head. I told my client, thats really going to annoy people, and drive them away, are you sure?

He said yes, so when you find a flash add with a fly buzzing about, I am sorry. Although I did get paid. I ran “Sound effects” for web sites and came across a host of sites. The trouble was, all the great sounds were difficult to obtain rights too. I could have just taken it, but I don’t dig that practice at all. So, I went back to some audio programming from yesteryear. Back in 1991 I bought a book called Programming the Sound Blaster, or something like it. I can’t recall. Anyway, it was pretty comprehensive for the card. So, I booted up my old 486 loaded the lesson a created the most annoying fly buzzing sound I could.

Now I feel like a geek.
