Working With the Purrfect Partners

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

Becoming successful running a website all by your lonesome is as likely as a turtle flying a spaceship to the moon. Why? Because the turtle can’t reach the pedals LOL! I made that one up all by myself! Hmmm.. ok back to the website thing. You can work on a website alone definitely, but without incoming links, your page rank will stink, nobody will visit, and you will be doomed like the passengers on the turtles spaceship.

So… how do you get links? Find the perfect partners! Find other websites similar to yours and build relationships with them to help both your sites succeed. Sometimes, the purrfect partner can be found in the most unlikely of places… For example, I have recently begun working with a group of cats and kittens in order to deliver the best web development news possible. The only difficulty with these partners is their need for frequent napping which ends a lot of meetings early…

this-meeting-is-over.jpg

Why have these furry partners helped increase traffic to Web Dev Notes? Probably because they add a little fun and mischief to an otherwise somewhat less exciting subject matter…! And how is this helping another website? Every one of these pictures is a link to the website from which they originate, thus thanking the creators and sending them back some traffic!

While cats may not always be able to offer the best web development advice, this week they have definitely helped prove that a picture can make an article much more valuable, entertaining and meaningful than the text itself could standing alone.

Face Your Mistakes to Save Face

Monday, April 28th, 2008

Take responsibility for any mistakes that you have made. Everybody messes up, but most people are not able to admit it. Don’t be embarrassed to admit you were wrong or to tell someone you made a mistake. While it’s not an easy thing to do, people will appreciate your honesty and maturity.

128340259094218750disisembarasin.jpg

What kind of mistake did you make? Maybe you got into an argument with a reader of your website or maybe you posted an article with incorrect information. Maybe you accidentally deleted the wrong database and therefore erased an entire forum with hundreds of posts which you had not made a backup of. Yup, I’ve done that one… :)

No matter what it is you have done, never try to hide it. People hate dishonesty. Everyone makes mistakes, we are only human. People can understand that and will realize it can happen to anyone. If you lie to your readers however and they find out, many will not be as forgiving because lying is not a mistake or an accident. Lying is purposefully misleading people. If you want return visitors, earn their trust and show them your are confident in your content and website and not afraid to admit defeat on occasion.

Be Your Own Boss

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

One of the great things about doing freelance work or running your own blog is that you get to be your own boss. When you are your own boss, you don’t have to worry about finding yourself in situations as show below…

128340228652187500thebosswunts.jpg

Of course, being your own boss isn’t easy because then you have to figure out how the heck your are going to make some money to live off of! Is is possible to make a living from blogging? Obviously the answer is yes. There are many examples of people earning above average salaries just by running a website or a blog. However, even though it is possible, it is definitely not easy.

The hardest part of earning a living from the web is going through all the steps and work that must be done before earning a single cent. You have to start somewhere, and usually that means working hard on your website for up to a year before you start to see any actual returns for all that work.

Is it worth the effort? That depends, are you the chicken or the cat?

Don’t Be Afraid of Uncertainty

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

Don’t let uncertainty hold you back from achieving success. You might not know exactly what lies ahead, but you’ll never find out if you don’t leap forward! If you’re blogging or starting up a website, hosting prices have become so affordable that there is no longer even much risk involved. In fact, you can even host a blog for free using Blogger or Wordpress if you are not ready to get your own hosting account.

How you define success will have a lot to do with whether or not you feel your website has become successful. If you define success as making millions of dollars, chances are you will fail. Before you decide your criteria for success, first ask yourself how much time you are willing to invest in your website. Now, taking this into consideration, determine how successful you believe you can be in that time-frame.

If jumping off the sofa is too high of a jump, leap onto a coffee table first! Define success as something within your reach, so you aren’t setting yourself up to fail. If you are not satisfied with the amount of success you believe you can achieve within your current limits, find a different project to work on or be prepared to invest more time in the project!

Are You Sad Because Nobody Visits Your Website?

Friday, April 25th, 2008

Are you sad because nobody visits your website? Do you wake up in the middle of the night with tears in your eyes because not a single person has noticed your online existence? Do you feel sick to your stomach each time you make a new post because you think you will die lonely and alone?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, don’t worry! You are among thousands of other crazy people who have joined support groups to talk about their lack of page views! Actually, crying about your present failure is a good thing, because it means you haven’t quit yet!

128297915513282500dontcraiwell.jpg

Will you get your cheezburger sumday? Err.. I mean, will you get page views someday?

Probably not. You’ll probably quit well before you start generating traffic to your website. If you don’t quit, you’ll continue waisting your time crying about your lack of success rather than putting in a serious effort to add new content daily while marketing your website. Most people will never get their cheezburger.

Sorry.

On a brighter note, an extremely small percentage of you will in fact be successful in the ever growing and increasingly competitve internet world! These people will be the ones who never gave up and who were able to survive the rought times.

Don’t let Chihuahua’s hold back your website! Start working with the purrrrfect partners and plot your plan for success. Make sure you plant the seeds for success early and listen to feedback so you can feed your readers a happy meal. Make good use of article directories and other marketing techniques and never forget the secrets to writing a successful blog!

Never Give Up! Survive the Rough Times

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

If you run a website or a blog you will soon realize that there will be good times and there will be bad times. The key to success is of course to survive the bad times and do your best to maximize the good times. Don’t let bad times drag you down even further by getting depressed as this will only cause you to slow down on your work pace. If you write a blog, you need to keep posting! Lack of readers could be a good reason to post more, definitely not less!

There are so many blogs and websites out there that chances are you will have competitors. No matter what, the internet is so very vast in size that people will find other content to view if you stop updating yours! If you let up for a second, you will fall behind. You blink, you lose! Keep plugging away at it and never give up. You can achieve anything you set your mind too if you put in enough effort!

Set Realistic Goals and Reach Them

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

Part of being successful is being realistic. If you have certain goals you really want to reach, don’t just set out to get them blindly. Identify your final target goal, then plan smaller, more realistic steps to help set you on the path to reaching the ultimate goal.

If you set your goals too high right from the start, you’ll never reach them!

The Cure to Writers Block

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

Having trouble coming up with a new idea to write about? Are you sitting there looking at the blank text box, hoping for a miraculous inspiration to arrive suddenly in your mind? What if… it’s not coming! What do you do? Do you run for the hills and hide from all your angry visitors who are demanding a new update? Or do you write a not-so-good content filler that is of low quality and which will cause yet another revolt?

When I’m stuck and in desperate need of ideas, I take a coffee break!

128298075525157500gimmemaicoffeh.jpg

Coffee might not be your magic cure, but taking a break to relax and clear your mind will definitely help. Browse the internet for a little bit and visit your favorite websites; maybe one will be discussing a topic that will light your flare and get those fingers typing.

I highly recommend visiting WebDevNotes.com as one of your favorite sites as well…! If my content cannot inspire you, at least the cats will!
